About Poems, and Poems; by Mr. Nand L Verma.
As far as I can recall, the first time I wrote something was when I was sitting alone in my classroom during recess in 9th or 10th grade. I must have been around 13 or 14 years old. I don’t remember whether it was a poem or a lyric, only that I wrote a few rhyming lines. Reading them over and over again gave me an incredible feeling, as if it was the best thing that had ever happened to me. Why I felt that way, I still don’t know. After that, whenever I had the time, I kept writing.
When I wrote for the first time, it wasn’t in English, but Hindi. Even though English was introduced in the sixth grade, I wasn’t skilled enough to write poetry in English back then—or perhaps I didn’t try. Still, I was inspired by songs I’d heard on the radio. Even when lyrics were deeply rooted in Hindi and Urdu poetry, singers performed them beautifully and musicians composed them wonderfully. That might be how I got interested in writing songs or poems in the first place.
I don’t have many of my own poems yet, but I need at least one page to make this portion of my website functional. There’s not much to read or listen to in terms of poems so far. Writing poems shouldn’t be difficult, but everything requires a considerable amount of time, especially while trying to stay financially afloat. If one isn’t making money from their hobbies, it can be hard to find the time to pursue them—most people are busy with activities that earn them a living. I’m speaking from the perspective of bachelors, of course; otherwise, everyone knows how spare time is consumed by family obligations.
Since I never married, had children, or other major responsibilities, apart from fulfilling basic needs, I’ve always had plenty of free time to kill or dedicate to something meaningful. Actually, humans can’t really kill time; therefore, I should write to pass the time.
And while living in USA when I first started trying to write in English, I was told that poetry written in English couldn’t be sung. I see that as more of an excuse because I believe that, for the musicians, lyricists, and singers who once created timeless songs, nothing should be impossible to sing or compose musically—especially when multiple people collaborate to create a song.
In English, though, it’s common for the same person to write, compose, and sing a song. While this can be more profitable, as there are no royalties to share, it has its drawbacks unless someone excels in all three areas. I’m not saying those who work solo are bad—many are incredibly talented. However, over the years, I’ve noticed that fewer songs in English seem to have an ‘immortal’ shelf life. This poses a risk to the music industry, as the younger generation might turn back to listening to oldies. Once people get hooked on those classic lyrics, music, and raw, untuned vocals, it becomes harder for newcomers to sell their music in any language.
What? Did I hear someone say something? Yeah, I said, who cares about the shelf life of a song or its video? Hey, that’s true too—because even in 2023, if someone earns US$50 million and knows how to manage it well, they should be financially set for life. Anyways.

So far, I’ve come to realize that poems often feel like the heavyweights of lyrics. Most of the time, humans and their brains must wrestle hard with poems to grasp their deeper meanings and messages. Writers meticulously shape and refine the words from every angle, and then readers or listeners go through their own mental wrestling to uncover the meaning behind those words and lines. For many, poems can seem like intricate jigsaw puzzles of words that require time and effort to solve, as they try to decode the original message hidden within.
In some other languages, certain song lyrics can share these qualities as well. What? Did I hear someone say something? Oh, yeah—I said that’s why I love rap music. Most of the time, it’s straightforward and to the point, leaving little for the human brain to wrestle with. Rap lyrics and music tend to deliver their message directly, without ambiguity. Besides, the financial rewards can be impressive if someone is a skilled rapper. Even God Money isn’t bad for those who excel at it.
On the other hand, Shakespeare might have struggled to sell his work in 1017, even in his own hometown and country. But in the modern era, the saying ‘follow the money’ applies—as long as money has value, it rules the world. Even governments, whether state or central, benefit when someone is legally making money in abundance.
Everybody knows the consequences of working for minimum wage with honesty and integrity or taking on various odd jobs. Some people might never be able to ‘go with the flow’ to make money or achieve financial success as some rappers do. However, earning substantial wealth requires hard work, regardless of the method. When someone becomes rich through their talent, honesty, hard work, or brilliance, they are often seen as not only successful in life but also brilliant. What? Did I hear something? Oh, yes, I said everyone knows the truth.
I’m not sure how many poets worldwide have made millions of dollars solely by writing poems—perhaps none. Yet even psychologists, with centuries of knowledge, may never fully understand humans. The human brain and mentality are constantly evolving and shifting until the last breath of life. Ultimately, the question remains: who can provide humans with what they need to be happy and healthy for free Otherwise, humans must do almost everything in life to earn money—whether to survive, live decently, or become wealthy. While pursuing these goals, many people simply follow the flow to make money. At the same time, humans have an innate part of themselves that they can never fully ignore, no matter what they say or do to secure the basics, live decently, or accumulate abundance. Maybe that’s why Aliens decided to name us ‘Humans.’
Although I believe that most aspects of human mentality, actions, nature, and reactions are shaped by a particular psychology, everything in humans seems to originate from meeting basic needs to striving for more than enough in life. What? Oh, yes—I mentioned how some people, like you, may waste time getting caught up in the magic of words. Whether it’s to please others, to keep fighting with themselves, or to find the truth, they end up entangled in language’s complexity.
Hello, young and beautiful lady! For your kind information, even now, in old age, the hunger inside me remains the same as it was in my teenage years. Looking around, who is laughing? Please, be serious. Anyway, even when I write—including poems—I never imagined that certain lines, sentences, or paragraphs might not only answer my own questions but also allow me to express myself in ways I had never thought possible.
So, in a way for almost all the Earthly humans, life revolves around securing either the basics or more than enough of everything. Until the day humans develop technologies, machines, and robots that can provide essential facilities and amenities for free, enabling happiness and health, humanity will remain a collection of psychological complexities. They will lack the time to truly know themselves or explore their talents and qualities. Earthly humans often live to establish their identity—sometimes by any means necessary—based on wealth and material luxuries.
This is why few people dedicate time to writing poems, even if there’s no financial gain. What? I said, otherwise as everyone knows, money rules most lives. While poets rarely make US$50 or US$100 million just from poetry. But still for some the internet age has brought an abundance of wealth. If someone happens to enjoy a poet’s work, they might even anonymously donate a US$ million. Because they may recognize something profound in the poet’s words—something that wealth alone could never teach. Moreover, no one would dare tell wealthy individuals that, in reality and truth as a whole character and personality some of you are just iditos. Especially when money God rule the world. That’s why having a donation button on a website is essential. Thus, having a donation button on a website seems essential. However, I don’t understand why banks haven’t provided a simple code for account holders to copy and paste for such purposes.

Otherwise, in a world plagued by cybercrime and criminals, someone might discover computer code to redirect donations elsewhere. Furthermore, donation buttons often channel funds to charities. However, creators who develop content and websites for people worldwide to enjoy for free have the right to keep the donated money, especially if it is willingly given by individuals across the globe. Anyway.
Some lyrics and poems can often—or always—heal, satisfy, or provoke humans psychologically for the better. Even if people know the truth, they may struggle to express or share it in the way they desire. As a result, suppressed emotions and feelings can occasionally burst out in uncontrolled ways, without fully understanding or knowing the truth behind them. However, well-crafted lyrics and poems have the power to make almost everyone comprehend things that might otherwise seem impossible to understand.
Otherwise, if all earthly humans had access to the basics required to be happy and healthy—provided for free or with minimal effort—only the psychological complexities tied to love and relationships would remain to be addressed. That would not only bring significant relief but also pave the way for discovering life’s true essence. Otherwise, don’t almost all the humans use each other as tools to fulfill their own needs and desires?
What? Oh, yes—if the essentials were freely available from birth to death, no one would end up on the street, even after facing relationship challenges. Imagine returning to a free apartment or house, ordering free food and drinks from your computer or smartphone, and spending your leisure time writing one of the best poems. On the other hand, consider the silent domination and false accusations that often exist in marriages that outwardly appear perfect. Along with this, countless insecurities and instabilities affect almost every human’s life.
Perhaps some poems and lyrics can express what humans might never be able to say or convey on their own. This process can also psychologically heal someone by helping them understand life, situations, and circumstances more deeply. What? Oh, yes—I said that some truths are impossible to grasp, even with a Ph.D. in any subject. Schools, colleges, and universities can’t teach everything perfectly, except perhaps rocket science and other mechanical fields. And after that, we all know where, how, and on whom some of those rockets and other creations end up falling, causing harm.
Hello—this shouldn’t be happening in the era of computers and the internet. What? I said it seems like everything can now be remotely controlled. But are earthly humans becoming more humane or animalistic? Mumbling—my spell checker doesn’t recognize ‘animalistic.’ Maybe I invented that word. No—hello, WordPress spell checker does recognize it. If someone isn’t perfect in any language, they can still create new words and meanings. Looking around—who’s laughing? Hello, be serious, please. If someone isn’t perfect in any language, they can still invent new words. Anyway.
Right now, I don’t have much written in poems, so whatever I do have should be treated as a form of poetry—but feel free to check it out without any obligation. What? Did I hear someone say something? Oh, yes—I said the one you wrote that’s a fourth-grader’s poem. But no, a fourth grader may not have the ability to manipulate or understand many things in a particular way—unless someone is born with the memory and knowledge of what they learned in a previous life.
Actually, I’m keeping things simple and humorous here to attract more clicks and followers. These days, many people struggle to understand Shakespeare, even in his hometown, village, or country. This naturally means fewer clicks and followers, which, in the internet age, translates into failures and losses.
So, let’s hope for a future where humans don’t need to earn money or even the basics required to be happy and healthy. Otherwise, in reality, most earthly humans are either corrupt in some way or will do, say, read, or listen to whatever makes their lives financially easier. It’s a harsh truth of how society functions.
